MTV Interview

KB: Kelly Brook (MTV Presenter)
DH: Darren Hayes

KB: Hello there welcome back. I'm joined by Darren Hayes of Savage Garden! Hello there. (Daz laughs as crew cheers) Sexier in the flesh might I add.

DH: I don't know, she's pretty sexy isn't she?!

KB: You're looking rather slick. How are you?

DH: I'm really good.

KB: Where's your mate?

DH: (Looks to camera) What Mate? (Laughs)

KB: You know, the other one you sing with.

DH: There's only one person in this band. I continue to wear a blonde wig, and we never appear in the same shot ever. I'm kidding of course!

KB: so, why do you do all the work?

DH: You know. He does. Look, we write everything together, we're both songwriters, but I can just never shut up, so I'm better at doing this kind of thing. He's probably at some soundcheck or something. I don't know.

KB: So you kinda split it between you so you don't have to do all the work.

DH: Yeah, he's spending the money we've made (Crew laugh).

KB: Basically. That's a better option. Now, apparently you're really massive in the US, and did you knock Christina Aguilera off the top spot? (Daz kicks, and impersonates the noise). You did. She was there for three weeks wasn't she with that lovely ballad I Knew I Loved You.

DH: You know what- just off the top of my head, she was there for two weeks and we were there for three weeks and then Mariah Carey actually knocked us off the top spot, and she was number 1 with a song called 'Thank God I Found You'. (Daz's Dr. Evil) But unfortunately today, Mariah has DIED, and we're back at number 1 again!

KB: Oh brilliant! Does that happen then, you just go backwards and forwards?

DH: This has never happened to me before. This is our second number one in the US, so we're very thrilled.

KB: Oh that's good. She's got a song out over here. I'm not gonna plug her because we're talking about you!

DH: Oh look, I love her though, she's gorgeous. I got to meet her recently. She's sooo sexy.

KB: Is she really? (Daz nods) I saw her on TV and I didn't think she was all that. But anyway, I'm a girl and I'm gonna say that.

(Daz mouths) She's jealous

DH: But you're pretty sexy.

KB: But anyway. (Crew whoos!) Shut up! So, you do a very good impression of Christina Aguilera. Will you do it for us now, or is it too embarrassing?

DH: No, it's my Brixton version. No, my Essex version. Here it goes
'What a girl wants,
What a girl needs,
Whatever'. I don't know.

KB: Whatever the next words are (Daz laughs). We don't know. But we've got some callers for you. We've got Kim from Cheshire on the line. Hello Kim, what's your question for Darren?

KIM: Darren, I'd like to know what your favourite song is at the moment.

DH: Ooh that's a really good question.

KB: (Kelly whispers) your one.

DH: it's not my one actually. It's our brand new song Crash and Burn. It's in stores very soon. No. Um, it's probably that Macy Gray song called 'Try'. I think that's it.

KB: She's got a new one out you know.

DH: What's it called?

KB: 'Still'

DH: Oh that's actually it. The one where she says 'it's been...' Yeah that's my favourite one.

KB: The 'Still' one?

DH: Yes, I saw the video, and I think she's a sweetheart.

KIM: Er, Darren, could you say happy birthday to my sister?

DH: Sure. What's her name?

KIM: Michelle

DH: Michelle, happy birthday. The gift is in the mail.
(Everybody laughs)

(The caller says something, but it's drowned out by the laughter)

DH: Pardon me?

KIM: I think you've met some of my friends outside.

DH: Pardon me?

KIM: I think you've met some of my friends outside today of the Savage Garden Fan Club.

DH: I have met the four fans that exist in the UK. I met them.
(Everybody laughs)

KB: Do they follow you around?

DH: Actually our fans here are so beautiful. They give me little gifts and things and they're sweet, very sweet.

KB: I bet they're not as generous as the Jap fans though are they?

DH: Japanese fans are so beautiful and sweet. I worked out something about Japan, cos when you play there, they're very quiet and I thought they were boring, but really they're being very polite because when you stop playing they want to listen to every word you say, so it's complete silence.

KB: Oh that's nice. Makes a change doesn't it? Have we got any other callers on the line? Thank-you for that.

KIM: I might see you tomorrow, because I'm coming down to London.

DH: Oh right, because I'm gonna be at the shops. My hotel is...oh sorry!
(Everybody laughs)

KB: Thank-you for you call.

DH: Bye.

KB: Have we got another caller? No. We're gonna watch your video 'I Knew I Loved You'. Then we'll see if we've got another caller.

DH: I love watching myself in the videos.

KB: This is Savage Garden with 'I Knew I Love You'.

CUTS TO IKILY

(Crew Cheer)

KB: And that is because we've got Darren Hayes of Savage Garden in the house. Big cheers everybody. We have got another caller for you Darren. Are you ready? (Daz looks at KB's wristbands)

DH: I quite like your jewelry. It's very impressive isn't it?
(Daz rolls up his sleeves to show his wristbands)

KB: Do you like it. I bet yours isn't from Top Shop.

DH: Oh I've got similar things only better! I'm kidding. It's very spunky. Can we talk to somebody on the phone?

KB: Er, Diane from Huddersfield, are you there?

DIANE: Hi.

KB: What's your question?

DIANE: I just wanna know where did you get the inspiration for 'Gunning Down Romance'?

DH: Ooh. Um, 'Gunning Down Romance' is a song on our new album, 'Affirmation'.

KB: It doesn't sound very nice, does it?

DH: It's a little sad actually. Um, well, it's the complete inspiration opposite of I Knew I Loved You which is the song you just saw. Um, from getting tired of the game of chasing people and romance and stuff. It's a song about basically saying is love just chemical reactions in the brain? (Caller says something)

KB: Apparently so. I watched a show the other day.

DH: I know, isn't that sad. It's just chemicals between us.

KB: Oh. Oh, that's really horrible. Have you really got a... did you write that song?

DH: (Laughs) I did. We write everything. I don't really believe that. Basically, I'm a big romantic, always. I believe you're meant to pair off.

KB: So, who would you dedicate that last song to then?

DH: Who would I dedicate that to? Um, it's actually about Princes wife, Mitay (I know I haven't spelt that right)

KB: Who?

DH: Prince. You know, the Artist formerly known as Prince?

KB: Oh yeah.

DH: I call him that, cos I want to meet him someday. You know that guy who sang that song.

KB: His wife?

DH: Yeah.

KB: Isn't that dangerous?

DH: NO because it's dedicated to them because he said that when he met her, he really believed that he'd prayed for her 20 years beforehand and when he met her, he thought he had dreamed her into life. And I thought that was so beautiful.

KB: That's a lovely thing to say isn't it? Does that answer your question Diane?

DIANE: Yeah. Can I get his autograph, please?

DH: (Looks at camera) Sure, have you got a pen?
(Everybody laughs)

KB: Yeah, we'll get one sorted out for you Diane.

DIANE: Thank-you. Bye

KB: Bye.

DH: Bye.

KB: And can we play you a song now? Thank-you so much for coming down

DH: Yeah. Thank-you. I've had such a good time. I wanna play a video by my favourite little cutie, Britney Spears. You know there's that whole Britney, Christina thing, and you know... I was a Geri girl when I was a fan of the Spice Girls and now I'm a bit of a Britney girl.

KB: Are you a Britney girl? I think I am as well.

DH: Absolutely. It's called 'Baby, I Was Born to Make You Happy'.

KB: Here it is.
